Dhaka – Dhaka expressed surprise and shock that deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was allowed to make a statement at a public event in New Delhi on Friday. Sheikh Hasina was convicted by the International Crimes Tribunal in cases related to the July uprising.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement yesterday that during the event, she publicly called for the overthrow of the Bangladesh government and blatantly incited her party loyalists and the public to commit acts of terror to undermine Bangladesh’s upcoming general elections.
“Bangladesh is deeply indignant that India has allowed her to make such inflammatory remarks on its own soil despite repeated requests from the Bangladeshi government that India has not fulfilled its obligation to hand over Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh under the bilateral extradition agreement,” the statement said.
“This clearly jeopardizes Bangladesh’s democratic transition and peace and security.”
The Ministry of External Affairs said that allowing the event to be held in the Indian capital and allowing the “murderer” Hasina to publicly express hate speech violated the norms of relations between countries, including the principles of respect for sovereignty, mutual non-interference and good neighborliness.
It is also a clear insult to the people and the government of Bangladesh, the statement said.
“This sets a dangerous precedent for the future of Bangladesh-India relations and could severely damage the ability of future democratically elected regimes in Bangladesh to engage in, shape and cultivate mutually beneficial bilateral relations.
“The unabashed sedition by the Awami League leadership once again demonstrates why the interim government must ban its activities.”
The Ministry of External Affairs said Bangladesh will hold the alliance responsible for the violence and terror committed on the eve and on election day and will take appropriate action to thwart its evil plot.
In the previous months, the interim government had repeatedly asked India to prevent Hasina from speaking out and inciting violence in Bangladesh. Hasina fled to India on August 5, 2024, amid the uprising.
Dhaka sent a formal letter to New Delhi seeking her extradition.
At an event in December, Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said Hasina would decide whether to return to Dhaka.
