The Bride Wore an Archival Ralph Lauren Dress—in Bright Yellow—for Her Menorca Wedding

The bride didn’t have much in mind for the dress, except for one important detail: “I’ve always wanted to do something colorful,” says Rachel, who describes her everyday wardrobe as simple pieces in pastel hues. “The atmosphere is so bright [in Menorca]and I never do traditional ceremonies, so I tend to choose bright and colorful clothes. But she quickly discovered a hurdle that few brides face. “It’s hard to find something colorful that still feels like your own wedding dress,” she says. Of her initial selection, she thought: “This is a really great dress to wear to someone else’s wedding.” “

Rachel even considered giving up on her dream of a colorful wedding dress and even bought a white dress at vintage markets around New York City. (“I have seven to 10 vintage wedding dresses at home,” she says.) But she keeps returning to a classic yellow tulle Ralph Lauren dress from the Shrimpton Couture website — a size 48 from the spring 2015 show. “I’ve been thinking about it and coming back to it,” she said. “I kept going back to check and it still wasn’t sold out.” So even though the dress couldn’t be returned, Rachel took the plunge and bought it.

Rachel turned to several close friends for support, including fashion journalist Alina Cho, whose approval gave her the confidence to wear the sun-kissed dress. Even though Cho was a new friend, she became Rachel’s fashionable fairy godmother. “She was so into it, she texted me and said, ‘Rachel, I’m stressed about your wedding outfit, what’s going on?'” Rachel recalled. “Because of that, she ended up coming over on the wedding day to do the final tucks and adjustments.”

Despite her unorthodox wedding dress choice, Rachel wore white all weekend long. For a welcome party at Hauser & Wirth, she chose a draped, backless Kallmeyer dress. It was a last minute decision out of her spontaneity. “I planned a completely different outfit,” she said. But a week before she left for Menorca, Rachel’s friend, jeweler Nina Runsdorf, hosted an event with Daniella Kallmeyer. “I went and tried it on – Nina put this long diamond chain in the back and I fell in love with it,” she said.
