Beijing – On Wednesday, President Xi Jinping met with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing. China and Russia agreed to further extend the China-Russia Treaty of Good Neighborliness, Friendly Cooperation.
Xi Jinping said that 25 years ago, China and Russia signed the treaty, which laid the institutional foundation for long-term good-neighborly friendship and comprehensive strategic cooperation in legal form. Since then, Sino-Russian relations have developed by leaps and bounds.
He pointed out that the international landscape has undergone profound changes and the world faces the risk of returning to the law of the jungle. Against this background, the treaty’s advanced nature, scientific value and practical significance have become even more prominent.
He said that China supports the further extension of the treaty and is willing to work with Russia to uphold the spirit of the treaty and firmly promote back-to-back strategic coordination between the two countries.
The treaty was last extended on June 28, 2021, when Xi Jinping and Putin held talks via video link and issued a joint statement ahead of the 20th anniversary of the treaty’s signing.
