Kuala Lumpur – Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fazl said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar has given no indication that the 16th general election will be held this year.
Fahmy, who is also the alliance’s communications director, said the prime minister instead emphasized that the government must continue to work to solve the people’s problems.
“The Prime Minister gave no indication but he reminded leaders and MPs to always be prepared for any possibility.
“This includes elections in states such as Johor. While we know Johor may face elections, maybe not now, but it is not impossible in the near future.
“The focus of leaders, especially cabinet members, is to ensure that our plans to bring about change and reforms are implemented as effectively as possible,” he said during a meeting after Teachers’ Day celebrations in Pantai Valley on Thursday (May 14).
Fahmy said the alliance’s national convention in Johor this weekend is expected to set the tone for the election, amid speculation of early state elections in Johor and Melaka.
He said Anwar, who is also the alliance’s chairman, is expected to outline its direction at the convention, which will guide election preparations and seat negotiations at the state and national levels.
“In his message, we will receive instructions amid speculation surrounding state elections in Johor, Malacca and beyond.
“Of course, the speeches of the top leadership of the alliance will set out the framework and subsequently guide the preparation of the electoral machinery and seat negotiations at the state and national levels,” he said.
