Hadid once again delved into the archives and stumbled upon the Miu Miu Spring 1998 collection. “I love the way the body and skin speak through the materials,” she says. The decision was made: Hadid and the Miu Miu design team would combine the two.
Starting with a sheer base from Spring 1998, Miu Miu designers hand-applied patches inspired by Spring 2011 to Hadid’s body. “Two days ago, we were all sitting in the hotel room and, quite literally, Scotch tape put the patch on my body in a way that felt thankful,” she said. “It’s built on the body. The body is the canvas.”
When it comes to beauty, Hadid opted for a more subdued look. “I think the star of the night will be Maybelline New York’s Cloudtopia Cheek & Lip Mousse Blush,” she said. “It’s the stuff that really brings romance to the story. Like a girl running out of a romantic, foggy, moonlit garden, and she’s just spent a wonderful night with the love of her life.”
For Hadid, the entire experience—from the custom gown to the glam—was an exercise in originality: “The Met is my favorite night because it’s a theme-based creative collaboration that makes me feel like we’re all back in high school art class.”
