“The science is promising, but many of these new ingredients still require more robust independent clinical validation before they can be placed on the same level as retinoids,” Dr. Li noted.
While retinol may be the star of the firming world, Lee points out that no formula (not even retinol cream) can match the results of professional treatments. “I always tell my patients to think of a well-planned skin care routine as maintenance, not as a substitute for laser or other in-office interventions,” she says. “If laxity is the main problem, topical treatments alone won’t do much compared to in-office treatments.”
