It was a full-circle moment for the shawls on the Fall 2026 runways, with coils and coils of material wrapping around models’ arms and chests. On Fforme, Frances Howie riffed on 1950s evening treasures in a brutal way; raw-edged shearling was “cut and redirected… to push the pile in different directions.” While both real and faux fur are the materials of choice, knitted fur and sequined fur options can be seen on many runways.

A shrug-like shawl serves much the same purpose as a shawl, i.e. to wrap around the body comfortably or to provide a sense of protection. Ellen Hodakova Larsson and Galib Gassanoff transformed rugs into shoulder pads, emphasizing a cozy feel, while some knitted versions looked like tea coasters, turning sideways to accommodate heads and chests rather than handles and spouts.

What fun do you have, is it a cup of tea, a donut, or both?
