When it comes to age, there’s no such thing as a hair rule (Embrace the grays. Grow your hair long. You do it.). But as we age, short hair becomes the preferred choice for many people, and here’s why: Our hair changes dramatically over time, and the goal is no longer just personal preference, but functionality.
“[Hair] As the scalp produces less oil, hair becomes finer, less dense, and becomes dry. Gray and white hair is coarser and more porous, which can change its color and reaction to products. Curl patterns also change,” says celebrity hairstylist David von Cannon. “That’s why a hairstyle that has worked for years may change as you age. “
Joseph Maine, global artistic director of ColorWow and co-founder of Trademark Beauty, added: “Our goal is less about fighting these changes and more about strategically working with them.”
So besides being chic and effortless, short hair has many benefits. Maine says it creates the illusion of fullness and lift, and can help you gain some softness and shape.
