Keeping your hairstyle moisture-proof is a well-thought-out task. Sure, the sun on your skin is tempting, but there’s a downside to the mildly warm weather we’re experiencing. Suddenly, you look in the mirror and your blowout is gone, literally. Your smooth hair seems to be damp again.
So, how can you keep your length looking sweet, despite some basic challenges? The truth is, I wasn’t entirely sure either (until writing this, of course). My thick, coarse hair retains moisture like a sponge. In fact, on a recent trip to Florida, my blowout disappeared within an hour of stepping out, expanding in width and shrinking in length. Experts say this is no coincidence. In fact, it has a lot to do with hairstyle. “Grey hair, chemically treated hair, and naturally textured hair are more prone to frizz,” professional hairstylist Travis Speck tells us Fashionnoticed that these above-mentioned hair types also tend to gravitate toward hair dryers, craving more moisture.
Professional hairstylist and colorist Madison Clifford agrees, and took a closer look at what makes these hair types more susceptible to the effects of humidity. “Naturally textured hair tends to be more prone to frizz because the cuticle is already more open and uneven, which allows moisture from the air to get in more easily,” explains Clifford. “That said, any type of hair type can develop frizz if the cuticle is damaged, whether from color, heat styling or environmental stress. Frizziness is less about texture and more about the condition and porosity of the hair.”

Another aspect to keep in mind is the porosity of your hair. “High-porosity hair absorbs moisture quickly but doesn’t retain it well, so in humid conditions it swells and curls almost immediately,” says Clifford. “Low-porosity hair can resist moisture, but once moisture penetrates, it can also ruin the style.” Speck agrees, adding that while high versus low porosity doesn’t exactly determine curl, there are many clients who fall somewhere in the middle — and, as Clifford points out, this is especially true if the hair has been color-treated.
TLDR: The solution lies in a program that includes a range of hair cuticle sealing creams. Below, you’ll learn everything you need to know about moisture blowout protection, straight from the pros.

Moisture-proof starts with shampoo
Start keeping your hair silky-smooth before you even start styling it. “Dampproofing starts with the basics,” says Clifford. “What you do in the shower determines how well your style holds up.” She recommends using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, which can help firm up uneven or damaged hair cuticles. That said, it’s also important not to lather, rinse and repeat too often. “Moisturizer is always key, but be careful not to over-shampoo,” says Speck. “It strips your hair of the natural oils it needs to keep it healthy, looking shiny and feeling its best.”
Additionally, for those with tighter hair texture, detangling conditioner in the shower can help better distribute the product from mid-lengths to ends; however, those with finer, straighter hair should be aware that this may lead to breakage. When it comes to drying, an often overlooked factor is in your towels. “Before you start styling, swap out your traditional terry towel for a microfiber towel to reduce friction and frizz,” advises Clifford.
