The list of restricted liquids in the security line at Lisbon Airport is short and reads as follows: water, shampoo, aerosols, yogurt. This is, I thought, a city with clear priorities, as I took off the sweater I had worn on the seven-hour flight and looked forward to the coming sunshine. Food plays a central role here. There’s a growing number of Michelin-starred restaurants here, and a humble shop selling garlic, if you’re into that sort of thing bifana If you don’t, pork sandwiches seem to be on every corner. Personally, I have always been very interested in food. So when a friend and I were looking for somewhere relatively warm and relatively close to the east coast to spend a few days vacation, it only made sense to put Lisbon at the top of our list.
Despite its status as Europe’s capital and vague claims that “everyone has to go to Lisbon,” the city keeps a very low profile. The busy streets lined with shops quickly turn quiet and residential as you circle around. You’re never far from an apartment where clothes are drying, Portuguese TV blasts from the open window, and the smell of unidentifiable deliciousness is brewing from someone’s stove. It’s easy to blend in with the slower pace of life of the locals, eating dinner late at night and taking leisurely strolls, but you have no choice; the hilly terrain isn’t ideal for a hurried trip.
Ahead, here’s everything I packed, ate, and shopped for during my six-day stay in Lisbon.

Travel clothing: I’ve become completely dependent on my White & Warren travel bag and now I can’t go anywhere without it; I alternately wear it as a shawl and scarf. It’s paired with Éterne’s long-sleeved T-shirt for easy layering and I know I’ll be wearing it many times on the road. I’m also a big fan of flat jeans and chose a pair from AYR, one of my go-to brands for tall sizes. They’re mid-rise (wearing jeans on a plane is one thing, but wearing high-rise jeans on a plane is the sign of a sociopath) and come in the perfect solid blue wash.
