kathmandu – The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSP) on Thursday unanimously elected senior leader Balendra Shah as its parliamentary party leader, formally paving the way for his appointment as the country’s next prime minister.
The decision was finalized at a central committee meeting held at the party headquarters in Banastali soon after the newly elected MPs took part in the oath-taking ceremony in Singhadurbar.
Party chairman Rabbi Ramichani proposed the post in Shah’s name, and the committee unanimously approved it.
Following the internal decision, the parliamentary party meeting formally approved the leadership arrangements. According to Article 76, Section 1, of the Nepalese Constitution, the President appoints the leader of the majority party in the House of Representatives as the Prime Minister.
The Real Socialist Party emerged as the largest party in the March 5 general election, dominating with a nearly two-thirds majority. With the party having a clear mandate, the president is scheduled to name and swear Shah in secret this Friday.
Earlier in the day, Arjun Narsingh KC, the senior most member of the Lok Sabha, administered the oath of office to all the newly elected members at the multi-purpose hall of the Parliament House in Sinhadurbar.
Shah, who was previously announced as the party’s candidate for prime minister in recent elections, will now lead the council of ministers as the RSP prepares to form its first majority government under the current federal structure.
