Few people live as kaleidoscopic a life as Liza Mae Minnelli. The showbiz icon married four times, achieved EGOT status and cheated death in his 80s. Now, in her new memoir, Kids, wait until you hear this, She recounts all the highs and lows in her own words—and they’re rich.
Lisa, whose parents are movie star Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli, was a Nebo long before the term was coined. Born in 1946, she came into the public eye quickly—in fact, as Minnelli tells it in the book, Garland woke up one night pregnant and guessed her daughter’s name. “Liza Minnelli is going to be her name! Looks like amazing On the movie marquee! “Her parents had already decided Lisa’s fate: she would become a star.
On the occasion of her 80th birthday, we take a closer look at some of the wonderful anecdotes from Minnelli’s memoir.
She was Princess Diana’s confidante
Minnelli and the Princess of Wales crossed paths at many events and concerts in London but somehow “always found a way to steal time alone”. They both value their friendship – a bond formed as very public family members – and they “violently protect each other’s privacy.” Princess Diana confided in Minnelli about her marital woes, giving her the nickname “The Vivacious Lady.”
“What I remember most clearly was the face of a friend who listened so carefully to what I was saying,” Minnelli writes in the book. “I have no evidence for this, but I firmly believe that if Princess Diana had lived, her sons would not be facing the current challenges. They were the most important people in her life, and she was clearly the most important person to them.”
