Happy birthday, Lady Gaga! Today, the singer and actress turns 40—and to mark her special day, Fashion Take a look back at some of her most memorable fashion moments. After all, Gaga is one of the most stylish and adventurous celebrities in the world. (Reminiscent of that infamous meat dress.) Literally, we’re revisiting 92 of her best looks over the years.
Since bursting onto the scene in 2008 with the critically acclaimed album reputationGaga’s fashion evolution has always kept us guessing. She’s the queen of change – completely changing her look with each album release. When we first met Gaga, she was looking futuristic and disco-inspired, wearing hooded bodysuits and architectural dresses. This year she also introduced the world to The Haus of Gaga, a small creative team that would be responsible for her costumes, props and sets for many years to come.
However, in the 2010s, Lady Gaga became the gorgeous red carpet dresser we know today. At the 2010 MTV VMAs, she paid homage to Alexander McQueen in a custom-printed Boss gown, a gold feather mohawk and stunning armadillo shoes (she loves a pair of death-defying shoes). “I’ve always been inspired by Alexander McQueen, who I think is probably the greatest designer of all time,” Gaga said in her sharing. That night, she changed into her infamous flesh-colored dress, designed by Frank Fernandez but imagined by Haus of Gaga—complete with, of course, a flesh-toned hat and flesh-toned purse. (Fun fact: In her “Life in Looks” video, Gaga revealed that a corset was sewn underneath the flesh to give the garment some much-needed shape.)
Over the past decade, Gaga has continued to experiment with different moods and fashion senses. for her 2013 album pop artshe went full quirky chic, wearing dramatic ensembles like a giant Louis Vuitton feather headpiece and an inflatable spike dress designed by Central Saint Martins alum Jack Owen. for her 2016 album Joanneshe leans more toward a country-western style, often wearing denim shorts paired with the pink cowboy hat she wears on the album cover.
