From her delicate, meditative debut, she takes a wild left turn, missing daughterThis stylized thriller directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal is a joyous ride through 1930s Chicago. Its central figure is Jessie Buckley, the bride of Frankenstein, dressed in a flowing silk dress, fluffy fringe, leather jacket and lace stockings, paired with dark, ink-stained lips; a curly bob; and an elusive smirk. Add Christian Bale as the monster in a pinstriped vest; a dapper Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard; and vampire Penélope Cruz, and the heart-warming figure is sure to inspire plenty of costume inspiration next Halloween.

Grace Snell, the thoughtful and effective costume designer behind the scenes souvenirResponsible for the hats, high-waisted gowns, velvet coats and embroidered handbags (seen in the first photo), this is a nostalgic update of one of Jane Austen’s most beloved novels. Following in the footsteps of Ang Lee’s 1995 rain-soaked version, starring the brilliant Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, the film was blue jeans“Georgia Oakley” is written by novelist Diana Reid and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esme Creed Miles, Caitriona Balfe, Frank Dillane, George MacKay and Fiona Shaw. Of course, it’s destined to be a quieter, more traditional, more poetic period piece than many of its gorgeous rivals, but it should be better.
