$53.6m health plan speeds up patient discharge in Queensland hospitals

The hospital will add 30 treatment spaces as bed capacity continues to grow.

The Crisafulli Government has announced the second phase of hospital transit lounge expansion, adding 30 new treatment spaces at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Prince Charles Hospital and Rockhampton Hospital.

The move aims to improve patient flow, reduce ambulance ramps and free up acute beds for urgent care.

The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital will undergo a major refurbishment to create a total of 46 treatment spaces within its jurisdiction under the A$53.6 million ($80 million) Accessible Health Services Plan.

The existing break room at Prince Charles Hospital will be expanded to 24 spaces, while the break room at Rockhampton Hospital will be relocated and expanded to 20 spaces.

Transit lounges provide dedicated areas for patients who are ready for discharge but awaiting medications, transfers or final test results, allowing hospitals to move acute care beds more efficiently.

This phase complements seven projects announced in September 2025, with new or expanded lounges at Cairns, Gladstone, Mackay, Logan, Redland, Townsville and Ipswich hospitals due to be operational by the end of 2026.
